The Pea Pod Guide to Babywearing Safely

Babywearing, whether it’s in a sling, a wrap or a carrier, can be such a great thing. It allows you to have both hands free while still snuggling with your baby. It allows you to multitask! We all know how necessary that is with a new tiny human. That said, we want to make sure you’re babywearing safely!

For Starters

Baby slings and wraps come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. It’s essential that you have one that’s safe, comfortable and properly sized for you and your baby. If your sling or wrap is not adjustable and Dad or another caregiver wants to wear and carry your baby, you might need two different sizes.

The Basics on Babywearing Safely

Being able to see your baby and respond to his or her needs is essential. Make sure you can see baby the whole time you’re babywearing.

Your baby should sit on your ribcage, in the “kissable” position.

Some Specifics on Position

A baby in a carrier, sling or wrap, must be in a vertical position. It’s key to babywearing safely. This prevents a baby from tucking the chin too close to his or her chest. As I’m sure you’ve heard, your fresh, tiny baby comes with a delicate airway! It’s safest for your baby to be upright to keep them- and you- breathing easily. The added benefit of this position is that it allows your baby to see and experience the world with you.

While babies grow and develop during the first few years of life, loose ligaments and soft bones make them more susceptible to hip dysplasia. If you’re using a baby carrier, it should be one that supports the back of your baby’s thighs and allows your baby to sit. Avoid carriers that hold your baby’s legs straight together or ones that allow your baby’s legs to dangle. Your baby’s knees should be in line with or slightly higher than his or her hip joints. As you position your baby, try leaning forward and forming an “M” with baby’s knees as the peaks and his or her bum as the valley.
